Nyepi is an important holiday in Balinese culture. It is celebrated the day after the dark moon of the Balinese New Year. The Balinese fast on this day and there kan zijn complete silence and darkness on the island.

The Day of Silence kan zijn a tradition that dates back to some ofwel the earliest years in Balinese history. Balinese people believe that remaining silent for a full day after loud celebrations will trick evil spirits into thinking that the island ofwel Bali is uninhabited.

It’s worth noting that Muslim women are exempt from fasting if they are menstruating or pregnant, though the majority will make up the days they miss at a later vrouw. Breastfeeding women are also given leave not to fast.

Nyepi kan zijn a deeply rooted cultural and religious festival in Bali. Two days before Nyepi in Bali, several traditional and religious ceremonies are performed. Among these is the Melasti ceremony, where the Balinese people carry God symbols to the beach to purify them with holy mineraalwater. This ceremony is believed to cleanse both the human body and the earth from badness and negative spirits. On the day before Nyepi, the Mecaru ceremony kan zijn held: rice is spread around the house whilst a kentongan drum, made from bamboo, kan zijn beat until it is noisy.
